Unified 3D Segmenter As Prototypical Classifiers
The task of point cloud segmentation, comprising semantic, instance, and panoptic segmentation, has been mainly tackled by designing task-specific network architectures, which often lack the flexibility to generalize across tasks, thus resulting in a fragmented research landscape. In this paper, we introduce ProtoSEG, a prototype-based model that unifies semantic, instance, and panoptic segmentation tasks. Our approach treats these three homogeneous tasks as a classification problem with different levels of granularity. By leveraging a Transformer architecture, we extract point embeddings to optimize prototype-class distances and dynamically learn class prototypes to accommodate the end tasks. Our prototypical design enjoys simplicity and transparency, powerful representational learning, and ad-hoc explainability. Empirical results demonstrate that ProtoSEG outperforms concurrent well-known specialized architectures on 3D point cloud benchmarks, achieving 72.3%, 76.4% and 74.2% mIoU for semantic segmentation on S3DIS, ScanNet V2 and SemanticKITTI, 66.8% mCov and 51.2% mAP for instance segmentation on S3DIS and ScanNet V2, 62.4% PQ for panoptic segmentation on SemanticKITTI, validating the strength of our concept and the effectiveness of our algorithm.

Towards Effective Visual Representations for Partial-Label Learning

Under partial-label learning (PLL) where, for each training instance, only a set of ambiguous candidate labels containing the unknown true label is accessible, contrastive learning has recently boosted the performance of PLL on vision tasks, attributed to representations learned by contrasting the same/different classes of entities. Without access to true labels, positive points are predicted using pseudo-labels that are inherently noisy, and negative points often require large batches or momentum encoders, resulting in unreliable similarity information and a high computational overhead. In this paper, we rethink a state-of-the-art contrastive PLL method PiCO[24], inspiring the design of a simple framework termed PaPi (Partial-label learning with a guided Prototypical classifier), which demonstrates significant scope for improvement in representation learning, thus contributing to label disambiguation. PaPi guides the optimization of a prototypical classifier by a linear classifier with which they share the same feature encoder, thus explicitly encouraging the representation to reflect visual similarity between categories. It is also technically appealing, as PaPi requires only a few components in PiCO with the opposite direction of guidance, and directly eliminates the contrastive learning module that would introduce noise and consume computational resources. We empirically demonstrate that PaPi significantly outperforms other PLL methods on various image classification tasks.
Dual Moving Average Pseudo-Labeling for Source-Free Inductive Domain Adaptation
Unsupervised domain adaptation reduces the reliance on data annotation in deep learning by adapting knowledge from a source to a target domain. For privacy and efficiency concerns, source-free domain adaptation extends unsupervised domain adaptation by adapting a pre-trained source model to an unlabeled target domain without accessing the source data. However, most existing source-free domain adaptation methods to date focus on the transductive setting, where the target training set is also the testing set. In this paper, we address source-free domain adaptation in the more realistic inductive setting, where the target training and testing sets are mutually exclusive. We propose a new semi-supervised fine-tuning method named Dual Moving Average Pseudo-Labeling (DMAPL) for source-free inductive domain adaptation. We first split the unlabeled training set in the target domain into a pseudo-labeled confident subset and an unlabeled less-confident subset according to the prediction confidence scores from the pre-trained source model. Then we propose a soft-label moving-average updating strategy for the unlabeled subset based on a moving-average prototypical classifier, which gradually adapts the source model towards the target domain. Experiments show that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance and outperforms previous methods by large margins.
